Granada has plenty to offer
the visitor and provides a charming mix of old and new.
The Alhambra is the citys most famous attraction and there
is plenty to see including the Alcazaba and the Palacio
Nazaries. The wonderful Moorish Palaces at Alhambra are
set against a backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains and
are surrounded by the beautiful landscaped gardens of the
Generalife. In Granada itself is Albayzín, the old Muslim
quarter where Islamic ramparts, cisterns, gates, fountains
and houses can be seen. The gothic/Renaissance cathedral
has an interesting interior. Various Catholic monarchs are
buried in the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel). The former
Muslim silk exchange, Alcaicería, is situated close to the
chapel and is full of shopping opportunities
Granada's biggest attraction
after the Alhambra is the city itself, which is set
against the mountain backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. Simply
wandering around the narrow streets of the Albayzin, the
city's old Muslim quarter, across the river from the
Alhambra, or the area around Plaza Bib-Rambla is a real
pleasure. Stop by the Casa del Castril (Archaeological
Museum) and Ba'os Arabes (Arab Baths), and the Capilla
Real (Royal Chapel) in which Fernando III and Isabel, the
Christian conquerors of Granada, are buried. Next door to
the chapel is Granada's cathedral, which dates from the
early 16th century. The caves of Sacromonte, dug into a
hillside in the north of the city, are another popular
attraction.
Granada airport is
located about 16 Kilometres west of the city near the
small town of Santa Fé. The access to the airport is from
the A92 Seville motorway
